Poetry 180

011. Passer-by, These are words...

                       Yves Bonnefoy
Passer-by, these are words. But instead of reading
I want you to listen: to this frail
Voice like that of letters eaten by grass.
Lend an ear, hear first of all the happy bee
Foraging in our almost rubbed-out names.
It flits between two sprays of leaves,
Carrying the sound of branches that are real
To those that filigree the still unseen.
Then know an even fainter sound, and let it be
The endless murmuring of all our shades.
Their whisper rises from beneath the stones
To fuse into a single heat with that blind
Light you are as yet, who can still gaze.
May your listening be good! Silence
Is a threshold where a twig breaks in your hand,
Imperceptibly, as you attempt to disengage
                 A name upon a stone:
And so our absent names untangle your alarms.
And for you who move away, pensively,
Here becomes there without ceasing to be.

I think that the controlling idea of "Passer-by, These are words..." by Yves Bonnefoy is that Bonnefoy wants the reader to know just because you know the names and dates on a tombstone, that you don't actually know anything about that person or their life. Bonnefoy uses personification - the attribution of human characteristics to inanimate objects - in order to make a person think more about something so small and of little importance. In the poem, you can tell Bonnefoy is trying to make you think about the names and dates on a tombstone because it says "A name upon a stone:...And for you who move away, pensively". The poem makes it seem as if Bonnefoy wants people to take a deeper look at the stones and think harder about what they are looking at. You can see that Bonnefoy uses personification in her poem because for example, its says "Foraging in our almost rubbed-out names". The word "our" in that phase shows that Bonnefoy is talking from a point of view of a group of tombstones. Tombstones can not talk, therefore she used personification to give an object the ability to do something they are not normally able to do.

Microfiction: I walked to school today

Dear Diary,
I walked to school today. I was hoping it would be an average school day but with my luck, it wasn’t. First, my alarm clock went off twenty minutes before planned because my brother had borrowed it. I turned off my alarm clock and went back to sleep. Unfortunately, it didn’t go back off until 6:30 when I usually wake up at 6. I ran down stairs, and took out my favorite cereal. Too bad my brother finished it up. Instead, I was left with the boring, bland, plain cereal that tastes like cardboard. I sucked it up, chose out my clothes, brushed my hair, searched the house for the tooth paste that my brother had taken into his bathroom and the finally brushed my teeth. Everything was going horribly wrong. Then I put on my make up, put on my perfume and packed my bag with all of my homework. At least I hoped I packed all of it. Then I grabbed a pair on sandals from my closet. I looked at the clock and I was 2 minutes late for the bus! I looked out the upstairs window and saw the bus driving away. By the time I got down stairs, it was too late; the bus had already turned the corner. My dad always leaves really early in the morning to go to work but my mom doesn’t. The one day that I miss the bus, she had left at 6:30 in order to take my grandma to the doctors for an appointment. It looked as if I would have to walk to school. Luckily for me the school is not too far of a walk. I picked up my backpack and started walking so I would not be too late. Half way to school, I realized that I had gym that day. I looked down at me feet and remembered I was wearing sandals. The coaches would not let me do gym in sandals. I took a closer look and realized, the sandals didn’t even match. I took one navy and one black! In my dark closet, the sandals looked as if they were the same color! I knew I would not be able to make it home and back to school in time so I had to just keep going. I would not be allowed to play in gym that day but it was okay, I could make it up. I finally was walking into the schools parking lot when I heard the bell ring from out side. I was hoping that it was just a 5 minute warning bell and not the actual bell. I had been late to math class twice before and if I was late one more time, I would get detention. Turns out that the bell was the actual bell and I was late. When I walked in I got scolded by my teacher in front of the whole class. Then he asked me for my homework. I looked in my bag and realized I had done my homework at the kitchen table and that was where I had left it. I had forgotten tot put it in my bag before leaving for school. Everything just kept going downhill when I thought I was at the bottom. I got detention, a zero for my homework, missed gym, and had miss matched shoes all before the first ten minutes of school How bad could my day be.

http://www.timesunion.com/news/article/Double-bombing-kills-2-in-northern-Iraq-2402685.php

I think that it is sad that Iraq is such a dangerous place. A war is going on there and it's own citizen are also setting off bombs. "Iraqi officials say a double bombing in northern Iraq has killed at least two people and wounding dozens." I know that there are some crazy people in this world who are very dangerous but I personally, would be so scared to live in the same area that bombs are going off killing people, and where a war is taking place. The article says "As people gathered at the scene, a truck packed with explosives blew up nearby, tearing through the crowd." I couldn't imagine being in a city and minding my own business when your average truck goes by and sets off bombs. In the poem, it says"I've thought about our military their struggles, their lives" people are dying in the war daily. I know that Americans also die daily due to the war but it is very scary to think about.

 Soldier's 'of the Iraq War'
I've thought about this country
This fighting, the war
Things that never really
Concerned me before
I've thought about our military
their struggles, their lives
And how hard it must be
On their families, their wives
The things they endure
For us all to be free
We take for granted
Everyday, you and me
Their without the ones
That truelly care
But have a bond with their brothers
Thats beyond compare
They watch their comrades
Fall in vain
Holding onto much more
than just the pain
They carry the scars of war each day
With not many a thankyou along the way
They stand with there backs
Straight and tall at the door
With no fear in their eyes
When its again time to deplore
Straight into battle, into the core
Our Strong Brave Soldiers, 'of the Iraq War'.
